Description: An introduction to technical mountaineering. You will learn how to belay, pitching, anchors for snow/rock/ice, prussiking, moving together safely on exposed terrain, knots, abseiling and roping up for glacier travel. This longer course will develop your skills through practice under supervision and will consolidate these skills with a suitable mountain objective.

Pre-requisites: Basic snowcraft/intro to mountaineering course or equivalent , at a minimum 5 x grade 1 peaks on snow (i.e. Mt Aicken, Mt Philistine, Castle Hill Peak). Basic rock climbing experience in outdoor sport/trad climbing.

Venue: Arthur’s Pass

Accommodation: Kennedy Lodge BYO food.

Cost: $720 per person including 4 full mountains days with a qualified instructor and 4 nights accommodation at Kennedy lodge.

Pre-course session: An information evening session is held one week night (to be arranged) in Christchurch to give everyone a chance to meet each other and to go through a plan for the long weekend and arrange transport. We will practice the following knots: figure of eight, alpine butterfly, clove hitch, Italian hitch, double fisherman. Prepare in advance by going through the Intermediate Mountaineering videos.

Date: July 21st – 24th. Arrive at Kennedy Lodge Thursday 20th July at 730pm, finish Sunday afternoon 4pm.
