Instructor: Peter Cammell, Keith Riley (NZOIA Alpine 2)


This is an intermediate/advanced instruction course. The course aims to develop and inspire climbers to have safe and successful independent adventures in the mountains through the application of professional good practice processes.

You will learn the following on this 4 day course:

  • Decision making processes
  • Managing self over long days including descending in the dark
  • Navigation and movement in complex alpine terrain
  • Moving safely in avalanche terrain
  • Roped safety systems for ascent, traverse, descent and glacier travel
  • Emergency skills: companion self rescue, crevasse rescue and re-grouping

Pre-requisites: Basic/introductory mountaineering course, at least 2x grade 1 peaks on snow. Basic rock climbing experience in outdoor sport climbing.

Venue: Arthur’s Pass

Accommodation: Kennedy Lodge and CUSC lodge

Cost: $750 per person includes 2 theory evenings, 4 full mountain days, 1 night at Kennedy Lodge, 3 nights at CUSC lodge. Includes MSC Avalanche Awareness Course ($299) at no additional charge.

Pre-course sessions: Two theory session will be held via Zoom sessions with Peter Cammell

Date: July 30 – August 3. Arrive at Kennedy Lodge Friday night 730pm, finish Tuesday afternoon 4pm.
