Cameron Valley, Arrowsmith Ranges

Owned by the Canterbury Mountaineering Club (CMC)

Access

  • Located in a glacial basin beneath the Arrowsmith Ranges at 1,275m.
  • 16 km (5–6 hours) medium-difficulty tramp from the car park.
  • Track is sporadically marked; route-finding skills required. Follow the true right of the river.
  • Sign the intentions book at the car park to notify local runholders of your access.

Facilities

  • 9 bunks with foam mattresses.
  • Stainless steel bench, rainwater tank, solar lighting, and area map.
  • Fire extinguisher, fire blanket.
  • Outside long-drop toilet.

Rules

  • Hut fees: Free for CMC members; $20/night for non-members.
  • Camping fees: $10/night for non-members.
  • DOC tickets are not valid for CMC huts.
  • This is a non-bookable hut. Payment does not reserve you a bed.

History

  • Built in 1952 by CMC members who carried materials in over several days.
  • Rebuilt in 1982 using prefabricated sections flown in by helicopter.
