Intro: A beginner’s Grade 1 trip on Mt Philistine 1957m in Arthur’s Pass

Date: Saturday 24th August

Itinerary: Carpool from Christchurch on the evening of Friday 23rd and spend the night in Kennedy’s Lodge in Arthur’s Pass Village. Early start on Saturday morning and parking at the Otira Valley carpark.

Starting on the Upper Otira Valley Track we walk about 2km until we meet the Otira River footbridge and cross there before continuing up to the base of the bluffs separating Warnocks Knob from Philistine’s East Ridge to the summit. Returning the same route. 8km roundtrip, 1000m vertical ascent,

Optional extra for those snow bunnies who are keen to make the most of the weekend: Spend a second night in Kennedy’s Lodge on the Saturday night and hit up one of the club fields (Porter’s or Cheeseman) for a day of loosening up the legs on our skies/snowboards

Previous experience required: basic snowcraft and confident in using axe/crampons and avalanche gear

Gear required: ¾ or full shank boots, helmet, ice axe, crampons, avalanche transceiver, shovel and probe. Sleeping bag for Kennedy’s Lodge.

Desirable: PLB/In Reach, emergency shelter

Plan B: Postpone until Sunday 25th if the weather dictates
