What is the Mt Rolleston Chossy Snow Fest?!

This is an organised meet to get people up on Mt Rolleston in early winter and spend a night camping out on the Crow Glacier!

What is a Chossy Snow?

Chossy Snow is defined as Arthurs Pass quality rock, with 1 to 12 inches of unconsolidated snow on top of it. Hopefully the conditions we will be getting in mid June!

Why should I come and what’s the plan?

We will car pool and drive up to Kennedy lodge on Friday night. Saturday morning we will head up the Otira Slide to Rolleston Low Peak and the Crow Glacier. We will spend the day doing activities, camp on the glacier on Saturday night and descend back to AP on Sunday.

What activities will people be doing on Saturday on the Crow Glacier?

There are so many possibilities!

  1. Tobogganing
  2. Practice your glacier travel and crevasse rescue skills that you need a refresher on
  3. Bring some skis so you can teach me how to ski
  4. Go play around on getting up to high peak from the Crow
  5. Come along to just enjoy the views and use that winter sleeping bag and tent you bought
  6. Get experience in spending time out in an alpine environment
  7. Go sleep / camp in a crevasse to practice for when you do the Aoraki Grand Traverse
  8. Come along to sip on tea / beers/ whatever.
  9. Play some cards
  10. Build a snow cave! (can’t guarantee this will be possible)
  11. Plus whatever else people want to do!

What skills and experience do I need?

Comfortable in getting yourself up the Otira Slide in June conditions, being on a glacier and camping up high mid winter.

Plan B: delay to another weekend with better weather

Gear required: Please make sure you have appropriate equipment to camp on snow in June at 2000m.  Grade 2 mountaineering gear to get up Otira Slide. Please reach out if you aren’t sure on if you have appropriate gear or experience. Avalanche gear.

Questions: Either email [email protected] or join the group chat on the CMC facebook page.

Is this event related to the Remarks Ice and Mixed Festival?

Nahhh. But it will probably be just as good.
