Intro: Rome Ridge – the ultra classic Arthur’s Pass winter climb

Date: Friday night (26/8) after work to Saturday (27/8).

Itinerary: Depart Friday night (26/8) after work and stay at CMC’s Kennedy Lodge.
Leave Kennedy Lodge early on Saturday (27/8). We will climb up the Coral Track to Rome Ridge and on to Low Peak. Depending on the interest and time, we may continue to high peak. Descent will be via the Otira Slide.
On Saturday evening we will return to Kennedy Lodge and adjust carpooling based on everyone’s plans on the Sunday: with people welcome to either return to Christchurch or stay and complete another climb on the Sunday.

Previous experience required: Comfortable using ice axe and crampons and completed some grade 1 or 2 climbs.
Comfortable with some exposure.
Long day expected (10+ hrs).
One or two pitches may be required around the crux gap section on the lower ridge so previous snow craft course or practical experience building snow anchors with snow stakes.

Gear required: Two ice axes, Helmet, Crampons, Harness with belay device, anchor building slings, Snow stake & rope (which will be shared between the group)

Plan B: Delay of the climb to Sunday 28 August. Potential to change objectives if the weather is better away from the Main Divide
