Intro: Come and climb Mt Rolleston High Peak via the Crow Glacier and Crow Hut, descending via Low Peak and the Otira Slide. This route is far less frequented than the Otira slide / Rome Ridge routes but adds a bit of adventure into the mix. It is something I have wanted to do for a while, so why not make a trip out of it. There are a few options to ascend High Peak from the glacier depending on people’s stoke.
Leader: Oliver Edwards
Date: 3-4 September 2022
Itinerary: Drive up Saturday morning, drop a car at the Otira car park and then head back to Klondyke corner and head up to Crow Hut. Early start Sunday, head up the Crow Glacier and climb High Peak before descending via Low Peak and Otira Slide.
Previous experience required: We are crossing a glacier with potential for crevasses, so some glacier experience is preferable. If there are a couple of less glacier savvy people, we can probably get a few on a rope to mitigate the risk, but would need some people with experience. Please let me know what experience you have in regards to this so I can tailor the group accordingly. Otherwise, climbing moderate snow slopes and some basic snow pitching knowledge.
Gear required: Overnight gear, dual axes, crampons, harness, 1 x rope (half or single) per team, helmet, snow stake, prussiks, slings, ATC, optional micro traxion or equivalent for glacier rescue.
Plan B: Cragging on Banksy P or Christchurch
