Intro: Rabbiters Peak is described by the guidebook as, “a superb spot with views from Mt Aspiring to Malte Brun”.
Leader: Eric Skea
Date: August 26-28th 2022 (departing ChCh 6 pm Friday the 26th)
Itinerary: Friday evening drive to Temple Campsite, located just beyond Lake Ohau in the Hopkins valley. We will travel up the Temple Stream North Branch, and camp either in the head of the valley or part way up the mountain. We will climb either the East Ridge or South Face, this will be decided right at the last minute based on snow conditions. Summit either Saturday evening on Sunday morning, dependent on route and weather.
Previous experience required: This trip is for people who have done some grade 1 (and preferably grade 2) routes in snow, and have done at least a 1 day avalanche course or equivalent experience. In terms of fitness needed, the total height gain is 1700m, mostly or all off-track and some of it in snow.
Gear required: Helmet, ice axe, crampons, shovel, probe, transceiver, overnight bivi gear
Plan B: If weather or conditions aren’t right, the aim will be to organise an alternative trip for anyone who wants to join in – mountaineering elsewhere in the South Island if possible, or otherwise something different like a valley tramp or rock climbing in the Banks Peninsula.
