CMC Hut Bagging Competition

 

Welcome to the Canterbury Mountaineering Club’s Centenary Hut bagging competition! A competition where the points don’t matter and the rules are made up.

Get ready to explore the best parts of NZ by visiting as many CMC huts as you can over the Centenary year!

 

How to Participate / Log your hut bagging

To participate, simply submit this form each time you bag a hut: Hut Bagging Form and you will be added to the tracking sheet below.

You need to upload photographic evidence of you visiting the hut.

 

Points System!

    • 🏕️ 1 pt for visiting the hut (3 points for Empress due to the Hooker Valley bridge closure)

    • 💤 1 pt for staying overnight

    • 🧗 1–7 pts for climbing a route (graded via the 1982 Mount Cook system — as it’s the most complete climbing grading system in the world)

    • 🔧 3 pts for hut maintenance (Keep an eye out for other hut maintenance bonus points / hints from the huts team throughout the year)

      • 🚪10 pts for whoever carries out the spare door out from under the toilet at Waimak falls hut (not the actual front door of the hut)
    • 0.25 points (bonus points) for human powered transport to: Barron Saddle Hut, Copland Shelter, Beetham Valley Hut, Plateau Hut, Tasman Saddle Hut, Kelman Hut, Centennial Hut, Almer Hut, Chancellor Hut, Castle Rocks Hut, Sefton Bivvy (only if bridge is closed) and Pioneer Hut

 

Frequency Asked Questions

  • Can you bag multiple huts on one trip? Yes!
  • To get the points for climbing a route/ mountain you need to visit one of the CMC huts above during your trip.
  • How many points is it if I bike from Christchurch to climb Pilgram on the Sheila face?  9.25 pts (1 point if you stay at Wyn Irwin, 1 point for Empress, 7 points for Pilgrim, 0.25 points for human power  style points). Note you can drive to MCNP and walk in to any of the huts to get your bonus points.
  • Can I get extra points for visiting a hut, or climbing something in good style? Make a case for it in the Hut Bagging Form and find out!
  • What if I link up multiple routes / summits in one continuous push? Put it in the form and see how many points you get awarded.
  • What constitutes hut maintenance? Tell us what you did in form and find out.
  • What is the dispute process if I don’t agree with how many points I have? We have a panel of Piolets d’Or recipients who will adjudicate on any disputes. All decisions are final.

 

Prizes and Recognition

At year’s end, the top hut baggers may win sweet gear or just eternal glory in the club archives. Even if you don’t top the leaderboard, your alpine tales will be way better than your mates.
