Trip Details
When: 27th/28th February, back up weekend of 13th/14th March for bad weather.
What: The Three Passes was a annual trip that was very popular when the club first started, over the years many members have done the crossing – both as a weekend 2-day or as a fast 1-day traverse! This year we will run this classic CMC trip, with a Arahura variation. Open to club members only – if you are not yet a member, please click here to join the club, it’s not very expensive.
Logistics: We will meet at Kennedy Lodge on Friday evening around 6-8pm, and people may arrange to team up if they wish for the 2-day or a 1-day traverse with others of similar ability. We will depart Kennedy Lodge at 430AM Saturday morning to travel to the Arahura trailhead via the club minivan (Lodge – Arahura trailhead is a 2 hour drive). We will first drive to Klondyke Corner (the finish) to deposit everyone’s cars for the end, and then over to the West coast.
Route: The plan is to travel west to east, traveling up the Arahura before joining the classic three passes route near Styx Saddle. A route map for the CMC route can be found here. Check out the DOC website for route description – click here (note this doesn’t include the Arahura variation). The estimated distance is 58km, with 3700m vert. Everyone will finish at Klondyke corner and can head back to Kennedy’s lodge for banter and some well deserved rest!
If you’re interested in joining please fill out the form below. We will cap this trip at 20 people, which is how many will fit into Kennedy Lodge. You will need to be fully self sufficient and self supported for the traverse.
